A legend among American designers, George Nelson (1908–1986) was an architect by training who successfully diversified into designing furniture, graphics, products and interiors. A graduate of Yale, George Nelson spent many years in Europe soaking up the influence of the many modernist pioneers he met. When he returned to the U.S., Nelson began writing about design of outdoor furniture and introduced to the nation several masters from Europe, including Le Corbusier and Giò Ponti. Nelson is also credited with introducing innovative concepts in interior design in America, most notably the now ubiquitous family room. His designs of modern bench that he created for Gordon International was highly appreciated.. In 1945 began Nelson’s long association with the design house Herman Miller. His collaborations at Herman Miller gave the world many unique designer products, including the famous ball clock, coconut chair and marshmallow sofa.
