Each year at the turn of spring the Milan Design Week brims over with fresh, new ideas in modern design. Fired by 6 action-packed days during the Milan Furniture Fair (April 5 to 10 2006) the event, held for the first time in the new Fiera Milano exhibition center designed by Massimiliano Fuksas drew thousands. The structure itself, a large group of buildings is a sight that draws attention to its wave of glass that wraps all the public areas and "washes" over the sides of the buildings it covers much as if a very large plastic sheet is stretched overhead. This annual design week spreads across the whole of Milan with hundreds of off-site events in showrooms, art galleries and public spaces. |
Some of the items that drew the numbers are Zaha Hadid’s futuristic kitchen made from DuPont Corian. The Z-Island unit is a ‘sensory-responsive kitchen environment’, Naoto Fukasawa's Cloud modular seating system, Patricia Urquiola's Hollow convex back seating and Antonio Citterio's Otochair to name only a few exceptional items.

Rising suitably to the occasion in bringing a select range of these avante garde items to just a click away is Spacify, Inc., a leading provider of contemporary designer furniture, on-line since 2000, 'creating the right environment within the customer’s budget’, while being an established springboard for International designers as well.

Drawing from the huge resource at Milan, Spacify’s new collection of contemporary furniture includes the Curva Armchair, a sofa collection by Jacob Pringiers, in a new collaboration with BRF, which consists of an armchair and two or three sofa seats. The ‘Curva’ draws attention with its exquisite graphic curve, inspired by ‘La curva perfetta’ (the perfect curve) and is characterized by lack of a predominant base so the sofa appears to float above the floor. It has an internal structure in wood and metal with polyurethane upholstery that can be a choice of luxurious leather or colorful textiles bringing out its playfulness, ideal for a cool modern home interior.

Another showstopper is the Rodeo Drive Collection, a bedroom unit, exquisitely book matched by able craftsmen of the Levitz Furniture Corporation that dates back to 1910. This six-piece package includes a Queen 4-poster bed, dresser, mirror and nightstand designed in a unique geometric pattern that is nicely balanced by arch-like curves that melds a time-honored tradition with modern design.

Taking a traditional chaise lounge (long chair) beyond its Rococo beginnings into a 21st century interpretation for contemporary furniture, the Ercolina Chaise is a masterpiece interpreted to its present form by Italian designer Paolo Grasselli for BRF. Recognized as a perfect piece for an executive who can use it during a break from strenuous deadlines, the piece has an integrated swing weight and space-saving design that turns it into an art object when lifted up. It is made of strong, light steel with polyurethane upholstery with pivot weight. It is evident why some of Grasselli’s designs are exhibited at the Deutsches Architektur Museum in Frankfurt and have been published in some of the most important design and architecture magazines.
